After beginning the process in 2022, the Salem Waterfront Hotel & Suites, located at 225 Derby Street in Salem, MA, completed an extensive renovation in July 2024. Nestled in the heart of downtown Salem, on the historic Pickering Wharf, the hotel is within walking distance of Salem’s most popular attractions. This prime location serves as a significant inspiration for the design transformation, aimed at evoking the elegance and charm of a high-end yachting experience while embracing the rich maritime history of Salem.

The 86 rooms were created to reflect the spirit of the sea and the rich Maritime history that the surrounding Pickering Wharf celebrates. Our rooms were transformed into modern, but comforting spaces that capture the adventure and relaxation that a voyage at sea can provide. Through the use of color, pattern and finishes, these inspired spaces showcase details and elements that are found on a classic wooden yacht, while additional nautical inspired decor supports the concept without feeling kitsch. The rooms provide a sense of place, while providing all of the amenities and comforts for the modern traveler.

The aspiration was to transform the hotel into a nautical contemporary retreat, leveraging its waterfront location to inspire a cohesive and curated experience in all areas, from the guestrooms to the common spaces. Custom rope artwork, nautical signal flags, vintage bathing suit displays, stripes, wicker elements, and shiplap on the fireplace were incorporated to reflect the essence of life at sea aboard a classic yacht.

One of the primary challenges was to reposition the product to attain a more elevated clientele and maintain the existing footprint of the hotel while implementing significant design changes. Despite these constraints, the renovation aimed to offer a seamless and thoughtfully designed experience without disrupting the structural integrity of the property. Custom artwork representing life at sea, rope knot lamps, and sailboat wall art contribute to the maritime atmosphere, creating a cozy retreat reminiscent of a luxury yacht. We worked with an amazing rope artist to create beautiful rope art installations, shaping the space with room dividers and wall art.

Innovation played a crucial role in setting this project apart. The use of actual sailcloth materials to create a bespoke signage installation in the corridors exemplifies the creativity and attention to detail that went into the design. Each element was carefully selected to tie into the overall story telling and create a memorable guest experience.
